XII Exhibition of South Italian Wines and Oils

The new 2017 edition of “Radici del Sud – Exhibition of South Italian wines” will take place from 30th May to 5th  June 2017 at Castello di Sannicandro di Bari.  Radici del Sud will share the wine contest with the first Exhibition of extra virgin olive oils produced in South Italy.

Under the name of Radici del Sud, the Association Propapilla arranges all sorts of initiatives that support the production of wine from native grapes, with the aim of spreading the high quality of the South Italian labels, enhancing their profile and offering opportunities for visibility within both national and international markets looking for authentic products able to express the territory they come from.

In this first edition of the Exhibition of extra virgin olive oil the producers will show and offer the visitors all their oils to be tasted during the two days open to the public, whereas all the many other activities scheduled for the full week will be still addressed to wine producers only. What’s new on Radici del Sud 2017’s schedules is the wider chance they will offer to the Exhibition of Wine and the Exhibition of oil which will be open two days long, the concluding ones, in order to allow both lovers and connoisseurs to visit them on Sunday 4th and Monday 5th June.

BtoB meetings - the blind tasting - the Exhibition

On 31st May, 1st and 2nd June the group made up of wine writers and buyers will join a press-tour, a workshop and meet the producers at Castello di Sannicandro di Bari learning something more about them and their history, starting possible  trade negotiations relying on the BtoB formula.

On the 3rd and 4th June the blind tasting is the event where the wines made by native grapes of Puglia, Basilicata, Campania, Calabria and Sicilia are compared. The mission consists of enhancing the South Italian oenology for the safeguard of that cultural heritage that makes agro-food products appreciated. the two groups of wine-writer (italian and foreign) and wine-buyer (italian and foreign) will taste all the samples belonging to the wineries that will take part in Radici del Sud, in order to select those labels that best represent the typicity of the grape they are produced from.

On the 4th and 5th of June at Castello di Sannicandro di Bari the Exhibition of wines from native grapes and extra virgin olive oils will be open to journalists, wine bloggers, wine buyers, restaurant and wine bar owners, sommeliers and wine lovers.

All the wines and oils produced in Apulia, Basilicata, Calabria, Campania and Sicily are allowed to enter the wine tasting of the Exhibition of South Italian wines.

The South Italian grapes allowed to enter the blind tasting                           Bombino; Cataratto; Coda di Volpe; Falanghina; Fiano; Greco; Grillo; Group of mixed white wines from less popular South Italian grapes; Minutolo; sparkling white from native grapes; sparkling rosè from native grapes; Rosé wines from South Italian native grapes; Aglianico (Falerno, Taburno, Cilento, Irpinia, Sannio); Aglianico del Vulture; Gaglioppo; Group of mixed red wines from less popular south italian grapes; Magliocco; Negroamaro; Nerello (Mascalese, Cappuccio); Nero D'Avola; Nero di Troia; Piedirosso; Primitivo; Taurasi (Aglianico);

Wines entering the blind tasting

All the wines entering the wine tasting can be assembled with other native grapes on condition that 70% of the chosen grape prevails. Every category is composed of about 15 labels.

When the category doesn’t include 12 labels, the wines will be put into the the mixed groups (white and red wines) where there are no percentages of grapes to fulfill. The participing vintage should be that on trade. All the wines whose vintages participated at the previous editions are not allowed in the competition.

The wines will be divided according to the grape, no longer based on their geographical region as in the previous editions. The aim is that of identifying the most relevant features of the different grapes regardless of the areas where they are grown and produced, thus strengthening the Radici del Sud brand  and making the product more recognizable once it is proposed on both foreign and national markets

How the wine tasting is carried out

Those wines entering the wine tasting will be tasted by the two juries: one made up of International journalists, wine experts and wine buyers and the other composed of both local and national journalists, bloggers and wine experts. The tastings will be held on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th June from 9.15 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. and from 3.00 p.m. to 6.30 p.m.

How the wines are judged

The wine tasting by the two juries will be anonymous both as far the wines- which will be rigorously covered  and the opinions and judgments expressed by both juries. At the end of the tasting, each jury separately through the president  will elect the first two wines for each category. Thus, the winners for each category will be four: two will be determined by the jury made up of international and national wine-writer and two by that of wine-buyer. The two juries will also declare the three most appreciated organic wines.

Proclamation of winners

The proclamation of the most appreciated wines of the eleventh “Radici del Sud” Edition is taking place on Monday 5th June 2017  during the conclusive conference  from 7.00 p.m. at Castello di Sannicandro di Bari. On 4th and 5th June the event will be open to the public. Guests will be given the opportunity to taste all the wines entering the blind tasting, the oils participating to the exhibition as well as dishes prepared by well known Apulian and South Italian chefs at Castello di Sannicandro di Bari.
